Favourite Best Picture Winner By Decade

‘An American In Paris’ (1951)

Read ‘Best Picture Oscar Winners: How Many Have You Seen?’ here.

Did you know – there have been 89 films which have won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, from a total of 537 nominees. The first ceremony took place in May 1929, with the award going to Wings.

I have seen 31 of the films which have been awarded Best Picture, and plan to watch all eventually. From those which I have seen, these are my favourite Best Picture winners by decade;

1930s: –

1940s: Rebecca, 1940 (Seen: Rebecca, Casablanca, Halmet)

1950s: An American In Paris, 1951

1960s: The Sound Of Music, 1965 (Seen: West Side Story, Lawrence Of Arabia, Tom Jones, My Fair Lady, The Sound Of Music, A Man For All Seasons, Oliver!)

1970s: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, 1975 (Seen: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Annie Hall, Kramer vs. Kramer)

1980s: Amadeus, 1984 (Seen: Amadeus, Platoon, Rain Man)

1990s: Forrest Gump, 1994 & American Beauty, 1999 (Seen: Schindler’s List, Forrest Gump, The English Patient, Titanic, Shakespeare In Love, American Beauty)

2000s: Chicago, 2002 (Seen: Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Chicago, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King)

2010s (so far): The Artist, 2011 (Seen: The King’s Speech, The Artist, Argo, Spotlight)

I just couldn’t choose between Forrest Gump and American Beauty

  2. Forrest Gump is my husbands favourite film. One of my favs is Gone with the Wind. Even though it’s 4 hours long I would watch it when I was I kid with my mum at least once a year on video ☺️!
