In the 21st Century, alcohol is the ‘drug of choice’ for the majority of the population. Illegal drugs are, of course, still illegal. Tobacco has become increasingly unpopular, although alcohol is still widely consumed. But how much do you know about the amount of sugar in alcohol?
It is fairly easy to find out the calories and unit amounts in the majority of alcoholic drinks, but in the case of sugar, it can often be a ‘hidden factor’, which you will have to seek out. Heavy drinkers are putting themselves at an increased risk of damaging their health permanently, and developing diabetes due to their drinking.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that the average sized adult consume up to 25 grams of sugar per day, which is the equivalent of six teaspoons. This is sugar from your food and drink consumption.
This is how much sugar, on average, is contained in an alcoholic drink. The figures will alter due to the different brands available:
- Gin, Rum and Vodka each have a very small amount of sugar in them, but it is often what you add to them which makes the sugar content increase. For example, adding orange or cranberry juice will likely take one drink to over six teaspoons of sugar.
- Wine can range from containing a very tiny amount of sugar, to around several teaspoons. Red wine and prosecco has generally low amounts of sugar, often around ¼ of a teaspoon per glass. But white wine will typically contain around two teaspoons per glass, or slightly more.
- Beer in general is known to be fairly low on the sugar scale, but this will also range from brand to brand.
Alcohol in moderation should not cause much harm, but perhaps the next time you are meeting up with friends for a drink, or buying alcohol in the supermarket, keep an eye on the hidden sugars which they may contain.
