Sex and the City was a hugely successful US TV show which ran on HBO for six series between 1998 and 2004. The series received high acclaim for its portrayal of four single female friends in their thirties, living in New York City. The series itself also spurned two feature films in 2008 and 2012, and a HBO prequel series entitled The Carrie Diaries.
Sex and the City is a show that has become synonymous with fashion. Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, is ‘the main one’ on the show. Carrie is a sex columnist, and the show follows her and her friend’s quest for love and romance. However, fashion is definitely one of Carries true loves. Throughout the six series and two films, we see the fashion styles of Carrie and her friends evolve throughout the years.
It has been 10 years since we said a fond farewell to Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha when Sex and the City graced our screens for the final episode (before we knew there would be two feature films!). This guide to the fashion of Sex and the City will take a look back at some of the most interesting outfits to have graced our screens throughout the Sex and the City years…
Sarah Jessica Parker had a no-nudity clause in her contract, meaning Carrie Bradshaw often went to sleep in her bra and had some very important conversations whilst wearing just her underwear;
The black dresses, the red lipstick, the hair… How very 90s of our Sex and the City girls;
Who else in their 30s could pull off the ballerina-tutu look?
For the times when you need to look smart, you can still put your creative stamp on a work outfit and make it look smart and sexy;
And who else can wear a newspaper print dress other than our favourite journalist?
The time Miranda looked like she was auditioning for Backstreet Boys was perhaps not such a good look;
Carrie pulls off the French look perfectly, managing to still look stylish in stripes, even when away from New York City;
And Charlotte shows us that even whilst exercising, you can still look totally cute;
Was there a time when pearls were hard to buy? Perhaps because Carrie Bradshaw had brought them all;
But we have to hand it to Carrie; she can amazingly pull off the ‘prom dress in McDonalds’ look;
Samantha shows us that, even with a 30 year age difference (and a slightly tamer Miley Cyrus!) you can still rock the same dress;
Not many people could pull off the heels, pearls, fur coat, sparkly hat and pyjamas look in the streets of Manhattan;
And not many people could pull off the bandana look in their 30s, other than our favourite single girl;
When on vacation in the Middle East, our favourite girls know how to look stylish, and how to fit in with the culture at the same time;
Labels are there to be used for a purpose, especially in a crisis;
But no matter what, our four favourite New Yorkers will always know how to look stylish in one of the most fashionable cities in the world!
